In the almost eight years I’ve been married to my lovely wife, perhaps the greatest thing I’ve learned from my in-laws (or outlaws as they affectionately put it) is to respect tradition. Whether it be singing Christmas carols around the holidays, enjoying smoked goodies at the annual Forest Park Ribfest, or listening to Irish bands (like the Dooley Brothers) play live at Fitzgerald’s in Berwyn around St. Patrick’s Day, we try our best to keep these events alive, each year.
When my sister got married, my Pops, brother and I were fortunate enough to be let in the inner circle of my brother in-law’s family tradition, Manmorial Weekend. Each year, close to 20 guys make the road trip up to the beautifully serene Northwoods of Wisconsin. Even if you’re not an aspiring angler in training such as myself, you will enjoy the tranquil, gorgeous morning waters of the endless lakes of Hayward, WI. If fishing isn’t your fancy, there is an abundance of well kept, inexpensive golf courses. Or you can recharge the batteries on the pier with a plethora of options from Leinenkugel’s or New Glarus (I prefer Canoe Paddler & Scream DIPA respectively). Any way you slice it, this vacation is about three of the most essential things in a man’s life, which are family, friends and Mother Nature.
So take a step back. Truly think about what is important in your life. Then grasp ahold of that event and create your own annual moment.
Here’s to tradition!
