On Sunday March 20th, 54 year-old British comedian Eddie Izzard ran a double marathon and completed his goal of 27 Marathons in 27 Days. The 27 marathons were intended to reflect the 27 years Mr Mandela had spent in prison before becoming South Africa’s first black president.
Eddie’s superhuman effort raised roughly $195 million for Sports Belief, Comic Relief’s biennial charity event held in association with BBC Sport, a non-profit that brings together sports and entertainment to raise money to help vulnerable people in the United Kingdom and the poorest countries world-wide.
“It’s been the hardest thing I’ve ever done,” said a “very tired” Izzard. “Thank you to everyone who has donated [and] don’t do this at home.”
