So while checking in on my Bing Rewards (Microsoft Rewards), one of the tiles indicated that Today is Tex Avery Day. If you don’t recognize the name then you’re either very young or just didn’t pay attention to the opening credits of some of the best animated cartoons produced during the Golden Age of Animation. These are the cartoons we watched as kids, on regular television before Cartoon Network, before cable, before the minefield that is now mid-day television.
Tex gave us Droopy, and the “whistling wolf” and was crucial to the development of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig and Chilly Willy.
I remember running home from grammar school to catch the early afternoon cartoon shows on channel 32 – way before it was Fox 32. Way before. Way, way before. Anyway, that’s how I first picked up on Tex and always looked forward to the cartoons that bore his name. “Billy Boy” is one of my all-time favorites, presented below for your viewing pleasure.
But, leave it up to Microsoft to get the date wrong, Tex Avery Day falls on February 22nd. Y’all come back next year, aw-right?!
