If you grew up in the Chicago area, you know, appreciate and likely adore all films from the repertoire of the late John Hughes. I struggle to name my reigning favorite, but the one that comes to mind this time of year of course is National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. Just like Clark W. Griswold (sporting a Blackhawks jersey) I talk my wife into hoisting a live Christmas tree each December. Since we don’t own a chainsaw, we take our business to the fine gentlemen of Michigan who sleep in mobile homes down the street (away from their families) just to offer us a vehicle to decorate and spread cheer within our Chicago abodes. Like a kid in a candy store, I smile as we bring this $34 piece of nature up the stairs. It may not be as big as the one in the movies, but it is symbolic and serves its purpose quite well. But that isn’t what we’re here to discuss today…
Deschutes Brewery will forever have a special place in my heart. I remember when they were first distributed to the Chicago market years back and my wife and I met some of their team on a Thursday night at Poor Phil’s. Many years later I still carry the bottle opener key chain they gave me and consistently stock their craft brews in my fridge, today. Always affordable, and typically sessionable this particular seasonal India pale ale, Pinedrops, tastes like Christmas trees, from the piney, aromatic hops they chose, to the slightly toasty/bready malts of Pilsner combined with Munich. Not my first choice (Fresh Squeezed IPA is far superior IMO) from their arsenal but appropriate nonetheless.
Hoping that everyone had a wonderful, safe and family/friends filled holiday season! What’s on your craft beer docket for NYE?!?
