Come January, you’re lucky if you can still get your grubby paws on a four pack of easily the greatest beer that Founders Brewing Company produces, Backwoods Bastard (wee heavy/scotch ale aged in bourbon barrels). This treat drops to the market each year in November and is typically ravaged from retail shelves by December. Essentially it is their year-round scotch ale (Dirty Bastard) recipe with amped up ABV and complexity. I’m partial to the 2014 release but 2015 is still wonderful, weighing in at an impressive 11.6% ABV (1+% higher than last year). Scotch notes meld beautifully with oak and bourbon, which finish with only moderate, boozy warmth in your belly. I’d reach for one of these 9 out of 10 times over a rocks glass of bourbon, as a treat yo self nightcap. If you can still locate bottles in stores or on draft at a tavern, this is not to be missed. In my humble opinion, it is my favorite seasonal release from any brewery and is better than their most sought after imperial coffee stout, KBS (Kentucky Breakfast Stout).
