The Edmund Fitzgerald

The sea speaks
And only the stormy hearts
Know what it says:
It is the face
of a rough mother speaking.

(From The Young Sea, by Carl Sandburg)

November 10, 1975.  Forty years ago today, the Edmund Fitzgerald, a freighter of the Great Lakes, sank in Lake Superior during a brutal storm.  All souls were lost.  Released a year after the sinking, the song The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald by Gordon Lightfoot, serves to memorialize the event for generations to come.

If you hadn’t already made the connection, next time you have a Great Lakes Brewery Edmund Fitzgerald Porter, you’ll know more about its namesake.
