Nintendo released a brief statement earlier today:
“Nintendo Co., Ltd. deeply regrets to announce that President Satoru Iwata passed away on July 11, 2015 due to a bile duct growth”
Iwata joined Nintendo’s HAL Laboratory in the 1980s, where he worked on games like Balloon Fight and EarthBound. In 2002, he was appointed President of Nintendo and was responsible for turning around the company’s fortunes with successful launches of the DS and Wii consoles. Throughout the industry, he was known for his warmth and accessibility. Through his “Iwata Asks” interviews, he picked the brains of Nintendo’s developers revealing fascinating insight of Nintendo’s creative process.
“On my business card, I am a corporate president. In my mind, I am a game developer. But in my heart, I am a gamer.”
Iwata-san, you will be sorely missed. Rest in Peace.
