Having a shot of Jeppson’s Malort is a right of passage for every serious drinker in Chicago. But did you know that there’s more than one brand of Malort? While it’s true that it’s a borderline crime against humanity to produce more than one type of Malort. Chicago based Letherbee Distillers took on the task to reinterpet the uniquely Chicago spirit.
Leatherbee worked with former The Violet Hour bar manager Robby F. Haynes to tweak the recipe and the result is more “refined” Malort . With the addition of juniper berry, elderflower, grapefruit peel and star anise, this riff on the original Malort is more of a slap in the face rather than a sucker punch.
If you’re brave enough, pick up a bottle at your local Binny’s ($35).
